Q

What is Dysarthia?

A

Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder characterized by weakness, paralysis, or lack of coordination of the muscles used for speech production. It results in slurred, imprecise, or distorted speech that can range from mild to severe. Common causes include stroke, traumatic brain injury, neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s, and conditions affecting the nerves or muscles involved in speaking. Speech therapy focused on strengthening oral musculature and improving breath support can help manage dysarthria.
