Diseases Flashcards
Distichiasis
Additional ciliae originating from abnormally located follicles (follicles are in or near the tarsal gland)
Trichiasis
Ciliae arising from normally located follicles, are pointed in abnormal direction (often together with the skin)
Ectopia ciliae
Additional cilia originating from abnormally located follicle (follicle may be located anywhere, e.g.: underneath the palpebral conjunctiva: cilia emerges through it)
Entropion
Inward turning of the eyelid margin
Ectropion
Outward turning of the eyelid margin
Hordeolum
Acute, localized swelling (barley grain-like) in the eyelid, usually due to bacteria (often Staph.)
Can be purulent inflammation of a lash follicle and associated gland of Zeis (externum) or of a tarsal (Meibomian) gland (internum)
Blepharitis
Inflammation of the eyelids
Can be bacterial/mycotic/parasitic/allergic, uni-/bilaterla, focal/diffuse, upper/lower/both
Chalazion
Lump in the upper or lower eyelid caused by inflammation of a gland of the eyelid, due to blockage of the glands (sterile inflammation)
Ptosis
Abnormally low position or drooping of the eyelid
Conjunctival dermoid
Inherited developmental abnormality that causes growth of skin tissue in the conjunctiva
Symblepharon
Adhesions of any portion of the conjunctiva to itself or to the cornea
Cherry Eye
Protrusion/prolapse of the third eyelid or gland of the third eyelid
Horner´s syndrome
Combination of signs and symptoms due to interruption of the sympathetic nerve supply to the eye
Usually ptosis, miosis, enophtalamus and prolapse of the third eyelid
Myositis eosinophilica
Immune mediated disease that impacts the masticatory muscles, and causes eno- or exophtalmus together with third eyelid prolapse
Microphtalmia
Developmental abnormality where one or both eyes are abnormally small
