what is screening?
A
the process of identifying apparently healthy people who may have an increased risk of a particular condition
- offered to people who are MOST LIKELY to benefit from it

what does a negative screening result mean?
A
LOW RISK FOR THAT CONDITION AT THAT POINT IN TIME
- it does not mean the patient will never develop the condition

what does a positive screening result mean?
A
THE PATIENT MAY HAVE THE CONDITION
- follow up diagnostic testing is required to confirm diagnosis

what screening tests are offered in pregnancy?
A
- infectious diseases HIV, Hep B and syphilis
- Down’s syndrome, Patau’s syndrome and Edwards’ syndrome
- sickle cell disease and thalassaemia
- check physical development of the baby at 20 weeks
- diabetic eye screening if pregnant and diabetic

- physical examination of eyes, heart, hips and testes
- hearing test
- blood spot test for 9 rare conditions

who is offered diabetic screening?
A
- all people >12yrs with diabetes every 1 year
- detects early signs of diabetic retinopathy

A
- all women 25-64yrs
- women >65yrs CANNOT self refer

A
- all women 50-70yrs every 3 yrs to detect early breast cancer
- women >70 can self refer

- all men turning 65yrs
- men >65yrs can self refer

- everyone 60-74yrs is offered a home test kit every 2yrs
