Disease Characteristics Flashcards
give examples of FLAT LESIONS
macule
patch
flat lesion with abnormal color
circumscribed area of color change
same plane as normal tissue pigmented due to melanin, blood, or metal <1cm single or in groups normal or pathologic
MACULE
relatively larger pigmented area flat well circumscribed
PATCH (theyre larger than macules but similar)
give examples of MACULE
melanotic macule amalgam tattoo (if small)
give examples of PATCH
snuffer-dipper’s keratosis median rhomboid glossitis amalgam tattoo
give examples of DEPRESSED LESIONS
erosion ulcer
crater like lesion on skin or mucosa loss of full thiccness of epithelium extends into CT usually round, can be irregular may scare can be traumatic, aphthous (recurrent), viral painful
ULCER
soft tissue lesion loss of epithelial cells above basal layer “epithelium is worn away” moist, slightly depressed may be ruptured vesicle, epithelial breakdown or trauma heals well (no scarring)
EROSION
give example of EROSION
erosive lichen planus
give examples of ULCERS
herpetiform aphthae traumatic ulcers primary herpes
give examples of RAISED and SOLID LESIONS
papule
nodule
tumor
plaque
small, superficial elevated <1cm any color sessile or pedunculated may be due to infection, hyperplasia, neoplasia
PAPULE
examples of PAPULE
fibroma
extends deeper than papule raised lump or mass <1cm may project or be detected by palpation asymptomatic or painful
NODULE
example of NODULEs
fibroma neural fibroma retrocuspid papilla (multiple nodules)
solid mass >1cm in diameter may be used to represent neoplasm well or poorly defined benign or malignant
TUMOR
flat, solid, and raised lesion may be well circumscribed or diffuse
PLAQUE
give examples of PLAQUEs
cheek biting lichen planus
give examples of RAISED and BLISTER like LESIONS
vesicle pustule bulla mucocele
small, <1cm fluid filled, raised lesion usually contain lymph or serum, maybe blood if superficial epithelium sloughs, will result in erosion or ulcer
VESICLE
examples of Vesicles
pemphigus recurrent herpes labialis (cluster of punctate, yellowish-clear vesicles)
vesicle filled with purulent exudate or pus
PUSTULE (duh)
large >1cm, fluid filled, raised fluit accumulates at epithelial-CT junction or within epithelium if surface epithelium ruptures: erosion or ulcer
BULLA
examples of BULLA
pemphigoid pemphigus bulls lichen planus
collection of mucus in the underlying tissue
MUCOCELE
linear crack or cleft normal or abnorma occurs on tongue, lips, peri-oral infection may cause pain, ulceration, inflammation
FISSUREs
example of FISSURES
fissure tongue (variant of normal) angular chelitis
tract or fistula (something that bulges out of its usual place) that leads from cavity to surface dilated tract leading from an abscess to the mucosal surface
sinus tract
example of sinus tract
Parulos
epithelial lined cavity or sac
cyst
serum filled papule or plaque “hives” scar (permanent mark after healing)
WHEAL
