Disease Flashcards
Health
The state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing - health is more than not being sick
Infectious disease
Caused by a pathogen and can be transmitted between hosts
Non infectious disease
The result of a part of the body not working properly can be caused by genetics, environmental or life style factors
Pathogen
Biological agents that cause disease
Vector
Agents that transmit pathogens
E.g mosquitoe
Transmission
The movement of a pathogen between hosts, involving a vector
Prions
Prions cause other protons to adopt their shape
E.g mad cow disease
Viruses
Hijack hosts cell and use cell system to produce more viruses
- changes regularly : hard to vaccinate against
- can lay dorment
E.g
Influenza common cold
Bacteria
Antibiotics work on bacteria ( by attacking cella - both good and bad)
E.g
Tetnas, whooping cough
Protozoa
Parasites that live in water
Fungi
Thrive in warm, moist conditions
E.g
Trush, ringworm
Endemic
Disease that regularly effects a small amount of people
E.g
Malaria
Epidemic
Higher than usual numbers in a certain place
E.g
Influenza in school
Outbreak
Uncontrollable disease
E.g
Ebola in Africa
Pandemic
Outbreak that’s global
E.g
Ebola in 2014 global
Lines of defence
1- physical barrier
2- non specific response
3- immune response
Physical barrier
Skin : protects bony from microscopic organisms
Mucous: contains antibody imnogobline that stops pathogens
Cilia: little hairs
Non specific response
Inflammatory response :
Puss: white blood cells distort pathogen, the dead cells are puss
Immune response
1
Passive immunity
When you inoculate body with antibodies that fight antigens
Active immunity
Vaccinating with a dead or weakened or related form of disease. This stimulates immune response without getting it
Natural immunity
Once you have had a disease your body recognises the antigen
Artificial immunity
When you stimulate immune response to fight antigen without it falling by exposing body to pathogen in small quantities
Disease
A disorder that effects a particular part of the body , and is not caused by physical activity
