Disease Flashcards
What are pathogens
Disease causing Microorganisms that gain entry to the host and colonies it’s tissue
What’s a disease
Malfunction of the body that has an adverse effect on the good health
Pathogen can cause disease in 2 ways
Kills tissues
By producing toxins
How do microorganisms gain entry into the body
When there’s an interface between internal and external environment
Interfaces at body’s lining are thin moist sticky and have large SA and good blood supply
How mucus enzymes and stomach acid prevent pathogen entry
Mucus : covers exchange surfaces to form a thick sticky Barrier to trap pathogens
Enzymes production : enzymes can break down pathognes
Stomach acid : kills microorganisms
3 main interfaces of the body
Gas exchange system
Digestive system
Reproductive system
Epidemiology
Study of incidence and pattern of disease with a view to find the means of controlling and preventing it
Correlation
Change in one or two variables reflected by changed in the other variable
Evaluating conclusions
State type of correlation
Correlation doesn’t mean causation
Evidence against
Data
Information collected can be qualitative or quantitative
Validity
Suitability if the investigation procedure to answer question being asked
Risk
Measure of probability that damage to health will occur as result of given hazard
Cancer
Occurs when cell divides too many times out of control
Tumor can be benign or malignant
Lifestyle choices and cancer
Smoking
Diet and obesity
Physical activity
Sunlights
CHD and lifestyle choices
Smoking
High blood pressure
Blood cholesterol
