Discussion Flashcards
How many articles were published that found significant results, and how many of out that were published by one of the three people discussed in this essay?
13 articles, 12 by either Christman, Lyle or Parker and Dagnall
What is publication bias?
journals want to publish significant, novel and controversial studies so they get more readers, generate more citations and enhance their standing within the psychological community.
How could publication bias be an issue for this particular topic?
There could be lots of studies out there who tried to replicate the results and found nothing, they could outweigh the significant results but because no journal will publish them they are all hidden in drawers. Also people may have given up on their research as soon as they saw there results were going to be unsignificant and never wrote up a paper.
What is p-hacking?
P-hacking is manipulating your data in order to achieve a significant result
What are some ways a person could p-hack?
stop collecting data once you’ve hit
In what way could these results be a product of p-hacking?
a number of studies results were only just p>.05, many participants were excluded from a number of studies - some reasons given were not very well explained
So what are the issues with this research?
The findings are inconsistent and badly explained at points, like the fact at one point vertical eye movements were helpful, then not, it goes from inter to intra, lack of brain/eye movement measurements etc.
