Discuss The Types And Functions Of Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
Define Simple Squamous epithelium.
It lines the alveoli, forms capillary walls, lines blood and lymph vessels, covers body cavity membranes
Define Simple Cuboidal Epithelium.
This tissue covers ovaries, lines kidney tubules and glandular ducts. It also plays a function in secretion and absorption.
Define Simple Columnar Epithelium
This is found in female reproductive tubes, uterus and most of the digestive tract organs, involved in secretion and absorption.
Define Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium.
This is found in the male urethra, ductus deferentia and areas of the pharynx.
Define transitional Epithelium.
This lines the urinary bladder, ureters and superior urethra to prevent urinary tract contents from diffusing back into the body environment.
Define Glandular epithelium.
Usually found in exocrine glands or endocrine glands.
What does the epithelia do?
It provides physical protection, protecting exposed and internal surfaces from abrasion, dehydration and destruction from biological or chemical agents.
What affect do the smooth tightly interlocked epithelial cells of the circulatory system have?
They reduce friction between blood and walls of the blood vessels.
As epithelium are exposed to friction, acids, bacteria and environmental factors, what makes them special?
Epithelium have a strong ability to regenerate due to the above factors.
