Discuss The Process Of Spermatogenesis And Spermiogenesis Flashcards
1
Q
What is spermatogenesis?
A
Process of the formation of male gametes in the testes (sperm). Haploid spermatozoa develop from gern cells in seminiferous tubules of the testis.
2
Q
What happens in early foetal development in relation to spermatogenesis?
A
Primordial gern cells differentiate into spermatogonia. These remain dormant until puberty.
3
Q
What is the 1st stage of spermatogenesis?
A
- Primordial germ cells differentiate into spermatogonium.
- Through mitosis, spermatogonium divides into primary spermatocytes.
4
Q
What is the 2nd stage of spermatogenesis + spermiogenesis?
A
- (Meiosis 1 - dna replication & crossing over). 1 Primary spermatocytes divide into 2 secondary spermatocytes.
- (Meiosis 2 - each chromosome has 2 chromatids, 1 goes into each spermatid). 2 Secondary spermatocytes divide into 4 spermatids. These then go through spermiogenesis and become spermatozoa.

Q
What is the composition of sperm?
A
- Head
- acrosome: contains enzymes required for penetration of oocyte.
- nucleus: contains chromosomes - Mid piece
- contains mitochondria which supply energy to the sperm. - Tail
- flagellum to transport sperm.
