Discuss The Process Of Spermatogenesis And Spermiogenesis Flashcards

1
Q

What is spermatogenesis?

A

Process of the formation of male gametes in the testes (sperm). Haploid spermatozoa develop from gern cells in seminiferous tubules of the testis.

Q

What is the 1st stage of spermatogenesis?

A
  1. Primordial germ cells differentiate into spermatogonium.
  2. Through mitosis, spermatogonium divides into primary spermatocytes.

Q

What is the 2nd stage of spermatogenesis + spermiogenesis?

A
  1. (Meiosis 1 - dna replication & crossing over). 1 Primary spermatocytes divide into 2 secondary spermatocytes.
  2. (Meiosis 2 - each chromosome has 2 chromatids, 1 goes into each spermatid). 2 Secondary spermatocytes divide into 4 spermatids. These then go through spermiogenesis and become spermatozoa.

Q

What is the composition of sperm?

A
  1. Head
    - acrosome: contains enzymes required for penetration of oocyte.
    - nucleus: contains chromosomes
  2. Mid piece
    - contains mitochondria which supply energy to the sperm.
  3. Tail
    - flagellum to transport sperm.
