Halyard
The rope that hoists the sail
Out haul
Tightens the mainsail along the bottom
Boom vang
Pulls the boom down to flatten the sail
Beating
When the boat is sailing into as much wind as it can
When beating it’s better to have the sail
Flat with little curvature; tighten the halyard, out haul, and vang
Bow
The front of the boat

The left hand side of the boat
Starboard
The right hand side of the boat when you are facing the bow
Aft
The back of a ship
Another word for aft
Stern
Leeward
The direction opposite the way the wind is currently blowing
Windward
The direction in which the wind is currently blowing
Tacking
Turning the bow of the boat through the wind so that the wind changes from one side of the boat to the other side. The boom will always shift from one side of the boat to the other in any tack or jibe
Jibing
Turning the stern of the boat through the wind so that the wind changes from one side of the boat to the other side, involves turning the boat directly into the wind
Sheet
Rope that adjusts the sail
