What are non-fluency features?
Features of spontaneous speech.
Repetition…
“I think… I think…”
Voiced pause…
“um” “er” etc.
Unvoiced pause…
Pause in speaker’s speech to breathe. Could be used for dramatic effect in planned speech.
Filler…
“Like” “Kinda like” “Sort of” -Give speakers time to think what to say.
False start…
“But sometimes… well most of the time…” -Change of thought reflected in the start of a sentence.
Backtracking…
Returning to a topic which had earlier been dropped.
Grammatical blends…
“I’d thought you might want to go out, do you?” -When a sentence begins one way and ends another.
Vague completer…
“And stuff…”
Slip of the tongue…
Use of the wrong word, one sounding similar to what they meant or one that was ‘on their mind’.
Backchanneling…
“uhuh”, “mmm”, “yeah” - signal that participant is listening.
Monitoring features…
Features that check other participant is listening: “you know what I mean?” “so you follow?”
