- Acts as deterrent as warns offenders about future conduct

A
- If court finds someone guilty for first time minor offence but decided not this give criminal conviction they will be given a discharge.

- Conditional
- Unconditional

A
- Offender won’t be punished unless commits another crime in set time (up to 3 years).
