What is a disaster?
An event that causes illness or injury that exceeds the resources of a health care facility
Examples of internal disasters
— within health care institution
— can happen same as external
— infectious breakout within confines of healthcare institution
— fire within confines of healthcare institution
— water break
— pipe burst
What is an external disaster?
— outside of healthcare institution
— can happen same time as internal
— chemical explosion at a factory within same district of hospital
— major fire at local large apartment complex
Tornado is an example of external and internal
What is mitigation?
Reduction of risk of a disaster that is foreseen or has happened previously
— ensuring of home against flooding
— crop insurance against drought
Mitigation is step 1
What is preparedness?
Being ready for a disaster that is imminent
Step 2
What is response?
Time right after disaster and the response to the disaster
— Red Cross
Step 3
What is recovery?
Period of time after response when life is normalizing
Step 4
Will go back into mitigation mode with new knowledge
What is green tag?
— non urgent
— minor injuries
— does not require immediate tx
— WALKING WOUNDED
What is classified as a yellow tag?
— urgent
— major injuries that require tx
— stable at this time and can wait
What is classified as a red tag?
— EMERGENT care needed in order to survive
— immediate threat to life
— need to be treated quickly
— part of explosion and lost arm
Black tag:
— dead or expected to die
— patients that have been thrown during expulsion
— no neurological response
