Disappearing Male Flashcards
Infertility can be explained by problems with
–Sperm formation
–Sperm concentration-Oligospermia or azoospermia
–Transportation
The declining fertility of humans and wild-life likely share a common cause:
environmental contamination by endocrine disruptors
What is an Endocrine disruptor?
Exogenous agent that interferes with the produc.on, release, transport, metabolism, binding, action or elimination of natural hormones in the body responsible for the maintenance of homeostasis and the regulation of developmental processes
Examples of endocrine disruptors
Environmental contamination is widespread with pharmaceutical, plasticizers such as pthalates and BPA, flame retardents (PCBS and OBDEs) and pesticides
Hypospadias
- Birth defect of the urethra in the male that involves an abnormally placed urinary meatus (opening).
- Closure of the urethral groove is under control of 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone, a derivative of testosterone
