Disaccharides and polysaccharides Flashcards
What are bonds between monosaccharides called
Glycosidic bonds
How do you test for non reducing sugars
Do the Benedict’s test, if negative get another smaple, add dilute hydrochloric acid and heat, this will hydrolyse the polysaccharides and disaccharides into monosaccharides and then add sodium hydrogencarbonate to neutralise it, and then redo the Benedict’s test, and if it is positive, the sample had non reducing sugars
How do you turn a monosaccharide into a polysaccharide
Condensation reactions will create disaccharides, and then if you repeat this you will get polysaccharides
What uses are there for polysaccharides
storage of energy, and structural integrity
What is starch made of?
Alpha glucose
How do you test for starch
add potassium ioidide, if negative it will be yellow, if positive, blue/black
