Superior
Towards the head end or upper part of the body
Inferior
Away from the head or towards the lower end of the body
Anterior
Towards the front or belly side
Posterior
Towards the back side
Medial
Towards the midline of the body
Example: the nose medial to the ears.
Lateral
Towards the side
Superficial
External, towards the body’s surface
Proximal
Toward the origin of attachment to the trunk
Example: the elbow is proximal to the wrist
Deep
Internal, inward from the body’s surface
Distal
Away from the origin of attachment to the trunk
Example: the knee is distal to the hip and thighs

Frontal or coronial plane- a vertical line that cuts the body in half from the side… dividing the body into the front and back
Sagittal plane- a vertical line that separates the body into the left side and right side
Transverse plane- a horizontal line that cuts the body in half passing through the middle of the abdomen

Anterior and posterior neck
