Caudal
The plane facing the hind end of the body. The rear portion of a structure.
Bilateral
Mirror image across the median plane
Cranial
The plane facing the head end of the body. The front portion of a structure.
Deep
Closer to the center; more internal
Distal
Further away from the point of attachment or body: furthest
Dorsal
The top line or the back surface
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body. The outside or external surface
Medial
Towards the midline of the body. The middle or inner surface
Median Plane
The plane or line dividing the body into two equal halves as into right and left equal sides
Palmer
The sole of the front limb continuing to the back of the carpus
Plantar
The sole of the hind limb continuing to the back of the tarsus
Proximal
Closer to the point of attachment or the body; nearest
Rostal
Towards the nose
Superficial
Towards the surface of the body; more external
Transverse
Parallel to the ground in anatomical position
