precisely describe location of features on the body
anterior
front of the body
posterior
back of the body
superior
above, towards the head
inferior
below, towards the feet
special rule about proximal and distal:
used when describing 2 points on the SAME limb
proximal
closer to where the arm/leg is inserted into the body
distal
further to where the arm/leg is inserted into the body
midline
imaginary vertical line that cuts your body in half
medial
closer to midline
lateral
further from midline
frontal plane
cuts the body into anterior and posterior portions
sagittal plane
cuts the body into front and back
transverse plane
cuts the body into superior and inferior positions, horizontal cut
oblique plane
any diagonal angle
