Inferior
Below
Ex. The thigh is inferior to the hips
Superior
Above (at a higher level)
Ex. The nose is superior to the mouth
Anterior/ventral
Front surface
Belly side
The umbilicus is on the anterior surface of the trunk.
Posterior/dorsal
Back surface
Rear.
Ex. The scapula is posterior to the rib cage.
Lateral
Away from the midline.(axis)
Medial
Toward the midline (axis)
Proximal
Closer to point of attachment
The shoulder is proximal to the wrist.
Distal
Farther from the point of attachment
Ex. The fingers are distal to the wrist.
Superficial
At, near or relatively close to the body surface.
The skin is superficial to underlying structures.
Deep
Toward the interior of the body, further from the surface.
Ex. The bone of the thigh is deep to the surrounding skeletal muscles.
