Divides into equal left & right halves
Cranial
Towards the head
Caudal
Towards the tail/rear
Rostral
Towards tip of the nose (applies to the head)
Dorsal
Top surface of the body towards the backbone
Ventral
Towards the stomach or bottom surface of body
Medial
Towards the median plane (inside)
Lateral
Away from medial plane (outside)
Deep
Towards the surface of the body
Superficial
Towards the surface of the body
Proximal
Towards the limb or appendage to the body
Distal
Away from the attachment to the body
Cranial Surface
Front surface
Caudal Surface
Back surface
Dorsal Surface
Area on front of leg & top of foot
Palmar Surface
Area on back of leg including the bottom of the foot (front limb only)
Plantar Surface
Area on back of leg including the bottom of the foot (back limb only)
Dorsal Recumbency
Animal(s) is lying on their back
Sternal Recumbency
Animal(s) is lying on their sternum with back facing upward
Lateral Recumbency
Animal(s) is lying on their side (left or right side down)
Oblique Recumbency
Body is tilted between dorsal or sternal recumbency or lateral recumbency
Dental Arch/Arcade
U shaped arrangement of teeth in the maxilla (upperjaw) or mandible (lower jaw)
Quadrant
Is the left or right side of each arch
