What is DTC DNA genetic testing?
A
- It provides the sale of genetic tests (internet based model) to the public without the involvement of the medical practitioner
- All laboratories are based in USA and hence Australian consume rprotection laws do not apply
- It can be used for confirming a diagnosis, screening family members, predicting someone will develop a genetic disorder and prenatal diagnosis

A
- Gives people greater control in improving the quality of their lives
- Allows rapid diagnosis when public or other private health care resources are in short supply and also alerts relatives when necessary

What are the disadvantages of DTC DNA genetic testing?
A
- Customers lack of preparation for counselling and without individualised medical supervision
- Access to tests requires pre-payment which may result in social-inequity
- Unnecessary follow-up might be an issue
- Relatives may find themselves alerted to health risks which they would have preferred to have no knowledge
- The information itself may not be of real value and may induce anxiety

- Sickle cell defect is straightforward
- Breast cancer gene test-Very complex to itnerpret and hence it needs to be monitored and counselled
- Type 2 DM- It has limited emaning to the individual as it is multifactorial
- Pharmacogenetic test helps to select a particular drug or tailor the dose to the individual’s genetic ability to metabolise. It has no evidence currently.

A
- Understand the clinical value of the test
- Accreditation status of the lab
- Clinical validity of the test
- Difficult to assess a test which might be caused by multiple mutations
- Referral to the specialist is the best option
- Hence important to counsel patients and inform of need to see the genetic services instead
