Placement

A

Place DOPs before the conjugated verb.

Les langues? Laurent et Xavier les étudient.
Languages? Laurent and Xavier study them.

Les étudients vous ont entendu.
The students heard you.

In negative statements, place DOPs between ne/n’ and the conjugated verb.

Le chinois? Je ne le parle pas.
Chinese? I don’t speak it.

Elle ne l’a pas pris à 14 heures?
She didn’t take it at 2 o’clock?

When an infinitive follows a conjugated verb, the DOP precedes the infinitive.

Marcel va nous écouter.
Marcel is going to listen to us.

Tu ne préfères pas la porter demain?
Don’t you prefer to wear it tomorrow?

A

When a DOP is used with passé composé, past participle must agree with it in both number and gender.

J’ai mis la valise dans la voiture ce matin.
I put the suitcase in the car this morning.

Je l’ai mise dans la voiture ce matin.
I put it in the care this morning.

J’ai attendu les filles à la gare.
I waited for the girls at the station.

Je les ai attendues à la gare.
I waited for them at the station.
