What are zener-diodes

A
  • One-way passage components that allow passage up to a certain voltage
  • Beyond this voltage, the current will flow in both directions

What are light-emitting diodes

A
  • Also known as LEDS, will emit light when current passes through
  • Mainly used as indicators
  • Less power consumption than lamps

What is a n-type material

A
  • n-type materials are materials used in semiconductors that has more electrons than are needed (slightly negative)

Q

What is a p-type material

A
  • p-type materials are materials used in semiconductors that have a deficiency in electrons (slightly positive)

Describe the p-n junction

A
  • When a layer of p-type and n-type material is butted against each other
  • Creates a one-way passage for electricity. This is because of the depletion zone which is a gap between the positive and negative charges

Q

What is a forward bias in the p-n junction

A
  • When the current flows in a direction and the unlike particles attract
  • This reduces the depletion zone and allows current to flow through it

Q

What is a reverse bias in the p-n junction

A
  • When the current flows in the opposite direction causing the particles to repel from each other.
  • This increases the depletion zone and prevents current from flowing through
