Diode Circuits Flashcards
Describe a Half-Wave Rectifier and draw it with the output waveform.
Diode only allows curent in one direction so a positive HWR will only accept the positive voltage of the waveform.
Describe and draw a Transformer.
Steps up or down the voltage.
Describe and draw the positive Full Wave Rectifier with the output waveform.
What happens to the frequency when a waveform is sent through a Full-Wave Rectifier?
f_out = 2*f_in
Draw the Bridge Rectifier and draw its a positive output.
In a Bridge Rectifier, what happens to the frequency?
f_out = 2*f_in
Draw a Choke Input Filter and draw the output
Draw a Capacitor Input Filter and its output.
Define Peak Inverse Voltage
The maximum voltage across the nonconducting diode of a rectifier. This voltage must be less than the breakdown voltage of the diode or the diode will be destroyed.
Describe surge current.
When the circuit is turned on, and the capacitor is not yet charged, it appears as a short. The bulk resistance of the diodes must be able to withstand the large current that results.
What are 3 types of passive Filters and what is their purpose?
RC, LC, Voltage Regulator.
Used to reduce the ripple in the output waveform produced by a rectifier.
Draw an RC Filter.
Uses resistors and capacitors to remove the ripple. Usable only for small current load or large load resistance because the voltage drop is a lot.
Draw an LC Filter
Draw a Positive Clipper and its output waveform.
Draw a negative Clipper and its output waveform.
