DIGITAL MEDIA Flashcards
Composition
The arrangement of visual elements in a work of art or photography to create a harmonious and effective result.
Rule of Thirds
A compositional guideline that suggests dividing an image into a 3x3 grid and placing the subject along the lines or at the intersections to create balance and interest.
Leading Lines
Lines within an image that direct the viewer’s eye towards the main subject or focal point.
Framing
Using objects within a scene to naturally frame the subject, drawing attention to it and creating depth.
Symmetry
A balanced composition where elements are mirrored on both sides of the central axis, giving a sense of harmony and order.
The Golden Rule
A mathematical ratio (approximately 1.618:1) often found in nature and art, used to create aesthetically pleasing compositions by dividing the image in a way that feels naturally balanced.
Timing
In photography and filmmaking, the exact moment when a shot is taken to capture the desired action, emotion, or effect.
Mood/Emotion
The overall feeling or atmosphere conveyed by a composition, often influenced by color, lighting, and subject matter.
Focus
The area of an image that is sharp and clear, drawing the viewer’s attention.
Shallow Focus
A technique where only the subject is in sharp focus, while the background is blurred, isolating the subject from its surroundings.
Deep Focus
A technique where everything in the frame, from the foreground to the background, is in sharp focus, allowing all elements to be clearly seen.
Perspective
The angle or viewpoint from which a subject is photographed or filmed, affecting the sense of depth, scale, and spatial relationships in the image.
Lighting
The way light is used to illuminate a scene, influencing the mood, tone, and clarity of the composition.
Natural Lighting
Light that comes from natural sources like the sun, often creating softer, more authentic tones in photography.
Artificial Lighting
Man-made light sources, such as studio lights or lamps, that allow for controlled lighting conditions in a composition.
Hard Lighting
A lighting setup that creates sharp shadows and high contrast, giving the image a more dramatic and intense look.
Soft Lighting
A lighting setup that produces diffused shadows and low contrast, giving a softer, more flattering effect
Call-to-Action Timing
The strategic placement of prompts encouraging viewers to take action, such as subscribing or visiting a website, often timed for maximum impact.
Aspect Ratio
The ratio of the width to the height of the image, affecting the framing and presentation.
Resolution (Video)
The amount of detail an image holds, typically measured in pixels (e.g., 1080p, 4K), influencing clarity and quality.
FPS
The number of frames displayed per second (fps), affecting the smoothness of motion; common rates include 24, 30, and 60 fps
