Types of digital imaging
Sill image; DSLR image capture on SD memory card (meta data)
Video image; captured by digital video camera on hard drive / dvd
What can you capture?
Digital image can never be an exact copy of the scene. Image is only an approximation of the scene.
Permission to capture images
No legal requirements
Assault victims - permission
Detained person - senior officer authority if not complying
Audit trial
- details of case - downloading
- access to master - use of master in court
- description of shots - details of copying master
- creation of master - storage of master
- media used - details of viewing master copy
- disposal of details
Captured images
Able to select image quality. Able to delete images, no image should be deleted without authority. Then recorded in the audit trial. Subject to criminal procedure act 1996.
Process
- download to computer (stand alone)
- WORM (write once, read many)
- Close recording session
- This is the master
- Make master copy or upload to server
- All copies taken from working copy
- Format memory card
Legal retention
The investigation must retain material obtained in a criminal investigation. The retention of a copy rather than the original is reasonable in all circumstances.
Digital imaging
All material which may be relevant at least until;
Convicted person has been released from custody, discharged from hospital or 6 months from the date of conviction.
Images are an exhibit
All images captures become an exhibit, treat accordingly; label as with all exhibits
