Digital devices, their functions & use
What is a digital device
An electronic device that uses digital data as opposed to analogue data
What is a multifunctional device
A device that can perform multiple functions, such as inputing & outputting data
Examples of a multifunctional device
Printer - It can print, scan, photocopy, fax & email
Force feedback game controllers - They can input data & output vibration
Touch screen - outputs an image , allowing the user to input data by pressing the screen
What are personal computers * their traits
(include examples)
Small & inexspensive computers for use by individual users, they operate as standalone computers
Traits
- Range of sizes - Levels of power & capacity
- Lightweight - Portable
Examples
Desktops & laptops - more portable and have a built in battery, screen and keyboard
What is a mobile device
Any digital device which can be carried around easily and is usually WiFi enabled
They are made with portability in mind to give people computer & internet access while on the go
What is a server
Type of computer that provides services for other computers on the network
Example: mail server that provides access to email services for all the users on a network
What are entertainment systems
Devices for watching TV/films, listening to music & playing video games.
Why are digital devices developed
To make everyday tasks easier, quicker or more cost effective & to provide efficient, improved access to data.
What are 2 different types of images does a digital camera capture
Still - Images that do not move (photos). They occupy less storage space that moving images
Video - Moving images which consist a series of frames to make a film
Function of a digital camera
Capture images and videos digitally using an image sensor & store them as digital data on media such as a memory card or hard drive
What is a navigation system
Those which use a GPS reciever to locate the users position on a digital map & provide directions to a given destination.
They provide info about
- Road works - Accidents
- Weather - Traffic congestion
Example: car satnav which uses GPS location data with software to provide directions to a given destinationn when driving
What is the function of communication devices & systems
These devices can send & recieve analogue or digital data to & from another device.
Traditional analogue examples include phones and faxes
A modern digital example is a router - directs data across a network
What is data capture & collection systems
Those which take information and collect it to perform a specific task
Examples: Barcode scanner, credit/debit card readers, fingerprint systems
