Alimentary Canal (or GI Tract)
An irregular tube that opens at both ends.
Emulsify
Mechanically breaks up fats
Peritoneum
Serous membrane lining abdominal cavity & covering most organs in abdominal cavity.
Mesentary
A continuous set of tissues located in your abdomen.
Digestion
Changing foods so that they can be absorbed & used by cells.
Mechanical Digestion
Chewing, swallowing, & peristalsis break food into tiny particles, mix them well with digestive juices, & move them along the digestive tract.
Deglutination
The process of swallowing.
Chemical Digestion
Breaks up large food molecules into compounds having smaller molecules; brought about by digestive enzymes.
Absorption
Diffusion of particles of gas or liquid or solid materials.
Feces
Poop, discharge of unwanted eaten materials.
Lumen
Hollow space within the “tube” of the digestive system.
Peristalsis
Wave like involuntary contraction, starts at the esophagus.
Oral Cavity (or Mouth)
Hallow chamber with a roof, floor and walls.
Hard Palate
A boney structure in the front of mouth separating the nasal cavity.
Soft Palate
A muscular structure with a moveable mucous membrane and is located in the rear of the mouth.
