digestive system 🩰 (STUDY) Flashcards
homeostasis
balance of the body
mouth:
breaks down carbohydrates using an enzyme called amylase. Also responsible for mechanical and chemical digestion
esophagus :
tube like structure that pushes down food using peristalsis.
stomach:
responsible for mechanical and chemical digestion uses gastric acid to break down proteins
small intestine:
Helps to absorb nutrients in the blood. majorly responsible for nutrient absorbtion and continues digestion by breaking down food further with enzymes and bile (22 FEET LONG, CALLED SMALL INTESTINE BC ITS THINNER)
large intestine:
part of the gastrointestinal tract water is absorbed there.it is called the large intestine because it is wider because it is only 5 feet
rectum:
the remaining waste material is stored in the rectum as feces (poop) before being removed from defecation
the liver:
balances out and breaks down nutrients produces bile which helps carry away the waste and fats
pancreas:
helps the intestines absorb nutrients from food intake, it produces chemicals to digest the food we eat. It also secretes enzymes that work with bile from the liver and break down substances for better digestion and absorption
gallbladder:
a sac that lives under the liver which stores bile the bile in the liver is stored in the gallbladder when a human eats the stomach releases a hormone that tells the gallblader to release the bile
ulcer:
an open sore that develops on the lining of the stomach
lactose intolerant
when a human cannot eat dairy due to their body not being able to properly digest lactose.. a sugar in dairy. If eaten this can result to diherea or severe stomach pain
celiac disease :
when the body acts abnormally to gluten when eaten it can damage the small intestine with nutrient absorption
chemical digestion :
digestion through chemicals and enzymes
mechanical digestion:
physically chewing food into small pieces grinding with teeth and swalloing
