digestive system structure Flashcards
Mouth
The place where food first enters the body and where chewing (mechanical digestion) occurs.
oesophagus
Passageway from mouth to stomach. The process of peristalsis begins from this point onwards.
Liver
Organ that makes bile and releases bile to be stored in the gallbladder. Bile will be used to emulsify lipids into small globules to be later broken by lipase enzymes into glycerol and fatty acids.
Gallbladder
Stores bile to be released into the small intestine.
Pancreas
Carbohydrases, proteases and lipase enzymes are secreted from here into small intestine
Small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum)
Enzymes from the pancreas break down carbohydrates, proteins and lipids here. Food is also neutralised. Most importantly however, absorption of digested food monomers into the blood takes place here.
Large intestine
Water is absorbed into the bloodstream from here
Rectum
Faeces is stored here
Anus
Faeces is expelled out the body from here in a process called egestion
stomach
where hydrochloric acid which kills bacteria by denaturing their enzymes and creates an acidic environment (pH2) for pepsin to work to break up proteins. Food exits here as chyme.
