Digestive system and enzymes Flashcards
Salivary glands
Found under the tongue, the produce amylase enzymes in saliva.
What is amylase?
It is an enzyme that is used to breakdown starch.
Gullet
Also known as the Oesophagus, it is the pipe that leads to the stomach that transports food from the mouth TO the stomach.
Stomach
Basically squashes your food with its muscular walls. It produces the protease enzyme pepsin used to breakdown your food. It has hydrochloric acid inside that is used to kill bacteria and provide the correct pH for the protease enzyme.
What is the job of the liver?
It produces bile which neutralises stomach acid and emulsified fat.
What stores bile before releasing it into the small intestine?
The Gall bladder
What does the pancreas produce and then release into the small intestine?
Protease,amylase and lipase enzymes.
The large intestine is where…
…excess water is absorbed from food.
Name one job that the small intestine does.
Produce protease, amylase and lipase enzymes to complete digestion.
Name another job that the small intestine does.
It absorbs digested food out of the digestive system and releases it into the blood.
Where is the faeces stores before exiting through the anus?
Rectum
Carbohydrases convert carbohydrates into simple sugars. Amylase is an example of a carbohydrase. Name the three places that amylase is made.
In the salivary glands, the pancreas and the small intestine.
Proteases converts proteins into amino acids. Name the three places that proteases are made.
The stomach (where it’s called pepsin), the pancreas and the small intestine.
Lipases convert lipids into glycerol and fatty acids. Where are the two places that lipases are made?
The pancreas and the small intestines.
