Digestive System Flashcards
What do proteins do
These build the cytoplasm( growth and repair)
What are carbohydrates
These provide energy for cell respiration and some provide fibre to keep the gut working properly
What are lipids (fats)
They make membranes and are used as fuel
Minerals and vitamins
These all have special rolls in the body
Eg. Iron is used to make red blood cells
What does fibre do
It makes up cellulose walls and it gives our food bulk so it is easier to be pushed along the gut
What does water do
It is 2/3 of our body It is the main ingredient in cytoplasm and is needed for certain chemical reactions to happen
What do teeth do
Cut and chew food to increase the surface area
What does saliva do
Saliva contains amylase which acts on starch
What does the tongue do
Mixes food with saliva
What does the Oesophagus do
Transports food from the mouth to the stomach by peristalsis
What does the stomach do
Churns up food has an enzyme that acts on proteins. Produces a acid that dissolves bones and kills bacteria
What does the liver do
Makes bile which breaks down fat in the small intestine
What does the pancreas do
Makes enzymes
What does the Duodenum do
It the start of the small intestine enzymes continue digesting here
What does the small intestine do
Where soluble food is absorbed into the blood
