Digestive System Flashcards
Animal dentition
What is the apical end of a tooth?
-the tiny opening at the tip of each root
-blood vessels and nerves from surrounding tissue pass through the apical to enter the tooth
What is the difference between tooth growth and tooth eruption?
-growth:
-new tooth material is formed at the apical end of the tooth and occurs at the same time as eruption, eventually ceasing over the animal’s lifetime
-eruption:
-continues even after the tooth has stopped growing and develops roots
What is tooth eruption?
-a process in tooth development in which the teeth enter the mouth and become visible
What is tooth growth?
-the development of a tooth into the mouth
-aka odontogenesis
-new tooth material is formed at the apical end of the tooth
What are the features of brachydont teeth?
-low/short crowned teeth
-sole tooth type in carnivores
-has a limited period of growth and eruption
What are the sole teeth type carnivores have?
-brachydont
What are the features of hypsodont teeth?
-long/high crowned teeth
-can continue to grow for the animal’s life
-enamel extends past the gum line
-enamel covers the entire body of the tooth but not the root
-prolonged growth and eruption period
-found in herbivores and part of an omnivore’s dental type
-good for animals with abrasive diets
Does enamel cover the crown and roots in hypsodont teeth?
-no, enamel covers the entire body of the tooth but not the root
Are the roots of brachydont teeth, covered in enamel?
If not, what are they covered in?
-no, the root is not covered in enamel
-the root is covered in cementum
What part of a tooth is the occlusal surface?
-the part that comes in contact with the opposite jaw
-chewing/masticatory surface
What is an infundibulum?
-a cup shaped structure in the occlusal surface of the tooth
When it gets to the bottom of the infundibulum, what is it called?
-the mark
What in a horse is the star?
-the pulp cavity being protected by secondary dentine and sometimes, tertiary dentine
What is the main difference between hypsodont and brachydont teeth?
-hypsodont teeth have a higher crown
What animals have hypsodont teeth?
-horses
-cows
What animals have brachydont teeth?
-humans
-carnivores such as:
-dogs
-cats
-pigs
What is dentine?
-the structure support of the tooth
-the second hardest tissue in the body, after enamel
Is enamel harder than dentine
-yes
When does the pulp cavity come to the surface?
-when the tooth progressively wears away
Role of the infundibulum?
-produce greater amounts of enamel in vertical curtains that substantially increase the durability of the tooth
What is the vestibular?
-the space between the lips, cheeks and teeth (dental arcades)
What is the name of the tooth surface facing the lips?
-labial
Name the surface of the tooth facing the cheek
-buccal
What is the name of the tooth surface that comes in contact with teeth of the opposite jaw
-occlusal
