Digestive System Flashcards
What does the mouth do?
Mouth - Chews up food to make it easier to swallow and increases the surface area of food for better digestion.
What does the Esophagus do?
Esophagus - Moves food from the mouth to the stomach through a series of muscular contractions called peristalsis.
What does the stomach do?
Stomach - Secretes gastric juices that break down food into chyme, a semi-liquid mixture, and helps kill bacteria ingested with food.
What does the small intestine do?
Small intestine - Absorbs nutrients from digested food particles into the bloodstream through finger-like projections called villi.
What does the large intestine do?
Large intestine - Absorbs water from undigested food, forms feces, and helps eliminate waste from the body.
Physical digestion
Occurs by chewing the food with our teeth (breaking it into smaller pieces)
