Digestive System Flashcards
What is the function of the digestive system?
The function of the digestive system is
What is ingestion, digestion and absorption?
Ingestion is the act of eating food
Digestion is breaking down food chemical and mechanical
Absorption is absorbing digested food to blood stream
What is Physical Digestion?
Physical Digestion is mechanically breaking down food by biting, chewing and grinding it
What is Chemical Digestion?
Chemical Digestion is using different enzymes or tiny proteins to alter the structure of the food
Describe the pathway of food
When you swallow the food, it travels as a bolus down the oesophagus into the stomach. After the stomach digests part of the food, it travels into the small and large intestines
Function of Salivary Glands
Secretion of saliva that creates the enzyme amylase that breaks down carbohydrase
Function of Oesophagus
Transport food to the stomach
Function of Small Intestine
absorption of water, organic substrates, vitamins and ions
Define Peristalsis
Peristalsis is a muscular contraction which helps move food down the digestive tract
Explain the purpose of bile
Bile is a green yellow fluid that is secreted by the liver cells to carry away waste
Identify the key enzyme protease
protease decomposes protein into amino acids
Identify the key enzyme lipase
lipases digests lipids to form fatty acids and glycerol
Identify the key enzyme amylase
amylase breaks down starch into glucose
Describe the structure of villi
Villi are specialised for absorption and have thin walls that are 1 cell thick
What does villi and microvilli do?
They increase the surface area for absorption of nutrients
