Digestive System Flashcards
Memorise diagram 1
yes
Memorise the stomach regions
yes
What is the peritoneum?
- closed cavity
- has all abdominal organs except from kidney and adrenal glands
- mesothelial cells covering basement membrane (fibroelastic tissue)
where is the parietal peritoneum?
at the outside bit of the body,
covers the abdominal wall and diaphragm
where is the visceral peritoneum?
In the middle of the upper region of digestive system
abdominal organs are covered
what are the 3 thirds of the lymphatic drainage of the oesophagus?
superior third: deep cervical lymph nodes
middle third: superior + posterior mediastinal nodes
lower third: left gastric and celiac nodes
memorise where the submucosa, mucosa, musclaris and serosa are located
yes
what are the functions of digestion?
ingestion
secretion
mixing and propulsion
mechanical digestion: chewing
chemical digestion: absorption, elimination, breakdown of food by enzymes

function of mouth, tongue and salivary glands?
- starts digestive process
- chewing and manipulation of food
- saliva = extra cellular fluid: water, electrolytes, epithelial cells, enzymes
what is peristalsis?
series of involuntary wave like muscle contractions which move food along digestive tract
what is the function of the stomach?
- temporary storage of ingested food
- chemical digestion
- absorption
- mechanical breakdown
- defense against microbes
- regulation of gastric contents into the duodenum
what is function of small intestine?
- propulsion, peristalsis
- secretion of intestinal juice
- absorption of nutrients
function of large intestine?
- absorption
- microbial activity
- defection
what are disorders of digestive system?
- cancer
- celiacs disease
- mega colon
- hiatal hernia
