Digestive System Flashcards
Order of organs
Mouth, oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, ileum, colon, rectum, anus
What does the mouth do?
Chew and create bolus
What does the oesophagus do?
Moves food from mouth to stomach using peristalsis
What does the stomach do?
Muscular walls of the stomach churn the food, stomach acid kills bacteria, gastric juices have enzymes that further break down the food. The food turns into a mushy liquid called chyme.
What happens in the small intestines?
Enzymes and bile are added to the chyme to break them down into molecules.
What do the villi do?
They absorb the molecules into the bloodstream
Where does the bile come from, and where is it stored?
Liver makes bile, and gallbladder stores it
Where do the enzymes come from?
Pancreas
What does the large intestine do?
Removes remaining liquid from faeces.
Where is faeces stored?
Rectum
Where do we excrete the faeces?
Anus
What is peristalsis?
Peristalsis is when the muscles of the intestine or oesophagus move, creating wave-like patterns to push the bolus down
