Digestive Secretions Flashcards
What are the cells lining the stomach?
Mucous cells
Chief cells
Parietal cells
Parotid gland secretes:
Salivary amylase (breakdown of carbs)
Sublingual gland secretes:
Mucin (lubrication)
Submandibular gland secretes:
Salivary amylase & mucin (both lubrication and breakdown of carbs)
Mucous cells secrete:
Mucous (protects lining by coating it)
Chief cells secrete:
Pepsinogen [inactive form of pepsin] (breakdown of protein by pepsin)
Parietal cells secrete:
HCL (breaks down tough plant material, converts pepsinogen –> pepsin, and neutralizes harmful bacteria)
Pancreas secretes:
- Lipase (fat digestion w/ the help of bile)
- Trypsinogen & Chymotrypsinogen [inactive forms] (activated to trypsin and chymotrypsin and breakdown protein)
- Pancreatic amylase (carb breakdown)
- Bicarbonate (neutralizes acid chyme)
Liver secretes:
Bile (fat digestion - breaks fat into smaller pieces)
Cells lining the small intestine secrete:
- Peptidase (final breakdown of proteins and amino acids)
- Multiple secretions (final breakdown of carbs to glucose)
What is the mechanical action that occurs in the mouth?
Mastication (chewing)
