Digestive Enzymes Flashcards
Which enzyme breaks down lipids?
Lipase
Which enzyme breaks down carbohydrates?
Carbohydrase
Which enzyme breaks down protiens?
Protease
What do lipids get broken down into?
Fatty acids + glycerol
What do carbohydrates get broken down into?
Simple sugars (e.g. starch → glucose)
What do proteins get broken down into?
Amino Acids
Where is lipase found?
Small intestine, Pancreas
Where is carbohydrase found?
Pancreas, small intestine, (amylase is found in salivary glands in the mouth)
Where is protease found?
Stomach, small intestine, pancreas
Role of bile
It’s alkaline so it neutralises the HCl in the stomach, making the optimum conditions for the enzymes in the small intestine
It also emulsifies lipids by converting larger droplets to smaller ones, increasing the surface area for lipase enzymes to work on → increasing rate of digestion
