What is the gastrointestinal tract?
Long tube through which food passes; includes mouth to anus.
Where does digestion begin?

What is the hard palate?
Bony front part of the roof of the mouth.
What is the soft palate?
Soft back part of the roof of the mouth.
What is the function of the uvula?
Aids swallowing.
What is the lingual frenulum?
Tissue under tongue connecting it to the mouth floor.
What is the pharynx?
Throat; pathway for food and air.
What is the esophagus?
Muscular tube that moves food to the stomach.
What is the mucosa?
Inner lining; secretes mucus and absorbs nutrients.
What does the submucosa contain?
Blood vessels, nerves, and glands.
What is the muscularis externa responsible for?
Muscle layer for peristalsis.
What is the serosa?
Outer layer; reduces friction.
What does the visceral peritoneum cover?
Covers digestive organs.
What does the parietal peritoneum line?
Lines abdominal cavity walls.
What is the mesentery?
Tissue that supports intestines and holds blood vessels.
What is the stomach?
Muscular sac; churns food and mixes with acids.
What is the cardioesophageal sphincter?
Valve between esophagus and stomach.
What is the pyloric sphincter?
Valve from stomach to small intestine.
What are rugae?
Stomach folds that allow expansion.
What is the greater curvature of the stomach?
Long outer curve of the stomach.
What is the lesser curvature of the stomach?
Short inner curve of the stomach.
What is the greater omentum?
Fatty apron covering intestines; protection & insulation.
What is chyme?
Partially digested food in the stomach and small intestine.
What is the main site for digestion and nutrient absorption?
Small intestine.
