Digestion-teeth Flashcards
Stage 1
Ingestion – taking food into the body
Stage 2
Digestion – the process of breaking down food into smaller, useable molecules
Stage 3
Absorption – the products of digestion are absorbed into our bloodstream
Stage 4
Assimilation – how the products of digestion are delivered via the blood to their target cells/organs and how they are also used by these cells and organs
Stage 5
Egestion – elimination of waste materials as faeces
Physical digestion
Physical digestion - breaking food into smaller pieces by mechanical/physical methods
This is the process of physically breaking food into smaller particles. The key part of this process occurs in the mouth and involves teeth.
Teeth are designed to cut, tear and crush food into smaller pieces.
Mammals have different types of teeth which perform different functions:
Chemical digestion
Chemical digestion: this is where the digestive processes use ‘chemical’ processes to break down the food.
The key molecules involved are digestive enzymes and the presence of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
