digestion quick Flashcards
1
Q
Describe how starch is broken down
A
Amylase is produced in the salivary glands + pancreas
Hydrolyses starch into maltose
Maltase hydrolyses maltose by breaking glycosidic bonds into alpha glucose
2
Q
Describe complete breakdown of lipids
A
Bile salts are produced in liver and released into small intestine
They emulsify lipids which increases the SA
Lipase catalyses the hydrolysis of ester bonds in lipids into a monoglyceride and fatty acids
3
Q
Describe complete breakdown of protein
A
Proteins are hydrolysed into amino acids by peptidases
Endo peptideases hydrolyse peptide bonds within a protein + increase SA for exo to work on
Exopeptidases hydrolyse peptide bonds at the end of proteins
