Digestion and absorption of lipids Flashcards
What is the function of undigested lipids
a concentrated energy source for the body
What are lipids broken down to in order to be absorbed
Monoglycerides and fatty acids
How does a small amount of lipid digestion occur in the stomach
By lingual and gastric lipase
When is lingual lipase activated
When it reaches the acidic environment of the stomach
what does gastric lipase breakdown
Triglycerides
Why does gastric lipase have a limited role in the stomach
Due to the stomachs PH
Describe lipid digestion in small intestine
Lipids are hydrophobic and enter the si IN large clumps. This means that lipase can only work on the lipid surface. This is overcome by emulsification so lipids are turned into smaller droplets which is aided by bile and form micelles
Describe the absorption of lipids
Products of lipid digestion are hydrophobic, so lipids associate with lecithin and bile salts to form micelles. Micelles disassociate releasing fatty acids and monoglycerides diffuse through brush border into cell. Once inside the cell chylomicrons form. These are too large to pass through capillaries, so instead drain into blood via lacteals. cChylomicrons are hydrolysed to glycerol and fatty acids making them small enough to pass through endothelia of capillaries
Define a micelle
Help transport poorly soluble lipid digestion products to enterocyte, where they can be absorbed
