Digestion And Absorption Flashcards
What are exopeptidases?
They hydrolyse the peptide bonds at the end of polypeptide chains (terminal bonds) releasing dipeptides.
What are endopeptidases?
Hydrolyses peptide bonds within polypeptide chains producing smaller polypeptide chains.
Where does protein digestion occur?
Stomach, and then ileum
What are membrane-bound DiPeptidases?
Hydrolyse peptide bonds to produce amino acids in the ileum
What does amylase do?
Hydrolyses glycosidic bonds in starch into maltose
What do membrane bound disaccharidases do?
Hydrolyses disaccharides into monosaccharides
What are examples of membrane bound disaccharidases?
Maltase, lactase, sucrase
Where does amylase work?
Salivary glands.
What does lipase do? Where does it work?
Small intestine, it hydrolyses ester bonds between fatty acids and glycerol
What are the functions of bile salts?
Emulsify lipid droplets into smaller droplets which provides a larger surface area for lipase to hydrolyse ester bonds.
Also forms micelles
