Digestion Flashcards
What happens to food in the rectum
Faeces are stored here until they pass out of the body
Where does digestion occur?
Small intestine
Large intestine
Throat
What is mechanical digestion?
Mechanical digestion is where food is broken by your teeth. this is called mechanical breakdown. The small food parts are mixed with saliva and swallowed
What happens for food in the stomach
Two things happen:
- The chemical breakdown of food begins
- microbes (tiny bad micro-
What happens to food in the small and large intestine’s
Small intestine:
The small digested molecules are absorbed into the blood stream
What is digestion
Digestions is the process of breaking large food molecules into smaller ones.the large starting chemicals are insoluble so they cannot dissolve in water.
What happens to food in the mouth
Food is chewed here and mix with saliva
What are enzymes
They speed up chemical reactions in the body.
- carbohydrase -> breaks carbohydrates into smaller sugars
- Protease -> breaks protein into amino acids
- lipase-> breaks back into fatty acids and glycerol
