Digestion Flashcards
what are macro molecules?
large molecules that provide nutrition (building blocks)
What are the 4 categories of macro molecules?
- carbohydrates
- lipids (fats)
- proteins
- nucleic acids
What are monomers?
Building blocks
Carbs main function
to provide energy
What do carbs include?
- simple suagars (monoccharides) - glucose
- diccharides - lactose
- polyccharides - cellulose
What are lipids main functions?
to store energy long term
What do lipids include?
Fats, Oils. they’re hydrophobic
What is triglyceride?
fatty acid. when 1 glycerol bonds with 3 fatty acids
What do Proteins include?
made of amino acids which are connected by a peptide bond.
most of our body is proteins
ex. hair, nails, bones, muscles
Nucleic acids main functions?
directs growth and development with its chemical code ( RNA and DNA)
what do nucleic acids include?
subunits make up nucleic acids called nucleotides.
how do you build macromolecules
when they come to together the OH and H break off and join together to create water. this process is called dehydration synthesis.
Disassembling macronutrients
called hydrolysis because water molecules are added cleaving (separating) the bond
are vitamins and nutrients macro molecules?
no
what is the difference between vitamins and minerals?
vitamins are organic and work as coenzymes
minerals are inorganic and allow certain reactions to happen
