What does each organ in the digestive system do

A

Mouth mechaical digestion salivary glands produce amylase. Oesophagus brings food down to stomach. Stomach pummels food with muscular walls. Acid kills bacteria and lets protease break down protein. Small intestine releases all enzymes and absorbs nutrients into blood. Large intestine absorbs water. Rectum stores waste

Q

Three adaptations of the small intestine

A

There is a constant blood supply so lots of diffusion can occur.
Capillaries are present and once cell thick which allows for faster diffusion.
Villi and microvilli invrease surface area to volume ratio

Q

What things does bile do

A

Emulsifies fats which makes them into smaller droplets. It neutralises the stomach so that lipase can work well on these smaller substances.

Q

WHat is the lock and key theory

A
