Digestion Flashcards
what are 4 reducing sugars
lactose, fructose, glucose and galactose
what is pepsin
an endopeptidase found in the stomach
what do endopeptidase enzymes do
hydrolysed the peptide bonds of non terminal amino acids so they are unable to break down proteins into monomers as the terminal end cannot be broken
what are exopeptidase enzymes
enzymes that hydrolyse peptide bonds from end pieces of terminal amino acids and so can break down proteins into monomers
what do dipeptidases do
they hydrolyse the peptide bond between the two amino acids in a dipeptide which are then secreted into the small intestine by the enterocytes
what are membrane bound disaccharidases synthesised by
by the mucous membranes that lines the small intestine
carbohydrases hydrolyse….
carbohydrates to monosaccharides
lipases hydrolyse…
lipids into glycerols and fatty acids
proteases hydrolyse…
proteins into amino acids
what does amylase hydrolyse specifically
the alternate glycosidic bonds of the starch molecule to produce maltose which is then hydrolysed into alpha glucose by maltase (disaccharidase)
what is emulsification
when lipids are split up into micelles by bile salts which increases surface area of lipids so the rate of lipases is sped up
