Digestion Flashcards
1
Q
Carbohydrate digestion
A
- Starch -> oligosaccharides by amylase
- Oligosacchardies -> monosaccharides by oligosaccharidases (e.g. maltase, lactase)
2
Q
Protein digestion
A
- Proteins -> AA or oligopeptides by pepsin/pancreatic protesases
- Any oligopeptides are broken into AA at the brush border
3
Q
Lipids digestion
A
- Formed into droplets by chewing/gastric enzymes
- Lipid droplets get amphiphilic coat to become micelles
- Micelles -> free fatty acids, monoglycerides, glycerol by pancreatic lipase in intestinal phase
- Triglycerides -> monoglycerides and 2 fatty acids by gastric lipase in gastric phase
4
Q
Iron digestion
A
- Fe3+ -> Fe2+ as ingested form cannot be absorbed so HCl, vitamin C, and ferric reductase encourage reduction
5
Q
Vitamin B12 digestion
A
Vitamin B12 binds to intrinsic factor to allow absorption
6
Q
General digestion
A
Digestion takes place in the stomach/small intestine. Gastric secretions often stimulate the release of digestive enzymes from the pancreas where they are generally stored
