Diffusion and Active Transport Flashcards
What can substance move in and out of substance with?
Diffusion and active transport
What is diffusion?
It’s the gradual movement of particles from places where there are lots of them to places where there is fewer of them.
TRUE OR FALSE
Is diffusion the net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration?
true
Does diffusion happen in liquids or gases?
Yes because the particles in both liquid and gases are free to move randomly around.
Examples of a small molecules that can diffuse through cell membrane
Glucose
Amino Acids
Water
Oxygen
Examples of larger molecules that can’t fid through the membrane
Starch
Protein
What is active transport?
The movement of particles across a membrane against a concentration gradient (from an area of lower to an area of higher concentration) using energy transferred during respiration.
How is active transport different to diffusion?
It’s different because the particles move up the concentration gradient rather than down and this process requires energy (unlike diffusion which is a passive process)
Name the process by which producers remove carbon dioxide from the air
Photosynthesis
Name the process by which carbon compounds in producers are taken into consumers
feeding
Name the process by which both living plants and animals return carbon dioxide to the atmosphere
Respiration
write the word equation for combustion
fossil fuels + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
Describe how decomposers are involved in returning carbon dioxide back to the atmosphere
Decay of plants and animals
how much water makes up the human body?
60%
name one thing we need water for
staying alive
what is it called when water is safe to drink?
potable
